Fleetguard Korea is Exclusive Supplier for Korea Compressed Natural Gas Bus Market

2 JUN 04 -- Fleetguard Korea launched a major program to supply Nelson branded Catalytic Exhaust Mufflers (CEM) for the Korean Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus market at the end of 2003. The CEM technology developed by Fleetguard's Emission Solutions business was first supplied to Daewoo Motors Bus Division for its new low-emission diesel-powered transit buses in 2002.

Since April 2004, the Korean Ministry of Environment published new environmental regulatory guidelines for CNG buses. Currently, CNG buses are not equipped with Catalytic Converters. To comply with the new legislation, major OEM bus manufacturers, Daewoo Motors Bus Division and Hyundai Motor Co., developed the CEM program in partnership with Fleetguard.

"This is a major opportunity for Fleetguard Korea," said Stan Nishi, Area Director-Fleetguard Japan and Korea. "We have been good partners with Daewoo and Hyundai for a long time, and the new agreement allows us to implement a project that will positively impact the environment-providing cleaner, healthier air in the major cities across Korea with our technologically-advanced aftertreatment product."

Fleetguard Korea has also supplied Daewoo Bus diesel engines with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) since 2002. "Our good relationship with Daewoo and Hyundai enabled us to move quickly to become the exclusive supplier of CEMs for both companies," said Harold Chung, Senior Manager-Fleetguard Korea. "We have the technology to meet their needs, and we have established our reputation as a worldclass quality supplier."

The Korean bus market is currently dominated by Hyundai, which also manufactures on-highway trucks. Daewoo produces heavy-duty buses through Daewoo Motors Bus Division. Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Co. manufactures heavy-duty trucks.

Chung explained that Hyundai and Daewoo will produce 5,000 buses each per year, with approximately a quarter of the total, or 1,000 buses, equipped with CEM. With the new legislation in place, manufacturers are required to equip CEM on all city transit buses driving in the seven major cities of Korea. Garbage trucks are also required to be equipped with CEM to meet the new requirements.

"Fleetguard Korea anticipates strong sales growth because the Korean Ministry of Environment is forcing the use of CNG buses instead of diesel. Currently with less than 4,000 CNG buses, it is expected by 2007 that there will be 20,000 buses using CEM. It is a very exciting growth opportunity," Nishi added.
