	South Africa Employees Work with Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest to Help Families Affected by HIV and AIDS
	28 OCT 08 -- Cummins Filtration (NYSE:CMI) , the global leader in filtration, exhaust, coolant and fuel additive technology for all engine-powered systems, held an Every Employee Every Community event recently in its South Africa location to support area families affected by the devastating diseases of HIV and AIDS. Cummins Filtration suspended operations at its Pietermaritzburg location for a day to allow employees to work with the Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest to install fencing and plant two vegetable gardens for families in the Shongweni community. Additionally, Cummins Filtration employees donated and delivered 14 refrigerators, stoves, toasters, kettles, cooking utensils and food storage goods to residents. Employees obtained the 105,000 rand funding needed for this project from Central Community Connections, a branch of the parent company’s Cummins Foundation. The Shongweni community was established by Habitat for Humanity to provide shelter to children in crisis due to HIV and AIDS. Cummins Filtration’s Community Involvement Team first began working with the Shongweni community in May 2007, when 26 employees helped lay the foundation for two homes. The company made a donation to Habitat for Humanity of 50,000 rand to cover all the material costs to build a home. Since then, employees have planted two trees at the site and supplied appliances and household goods to one of the homes. “Our entire Cummins Filtration team in Pietermaritzburg has supported this project with great enthusiasm and commitment,” said Tene Wright, Cummins Filtration Human Resources Manager, Diversity and Right Environment – Europe/Middle East/Africa. “Being involved in the local communities in which we live and work is very important to Cummins Filtration. We take our responsibility to serve the people of our communities very seriously. It is a vital part of our company mission.” The Every Employee Every Community event was organized by the Cummins Filtration South Africa Community Involvement Team and the Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest, with assistance from the local Lutheran Church. Cummins Filtration Materials Manager Ashwin Budhai provided general oversight, lunch and transportation for the project. The fencing effort was led by Cummins Filtration Safety Officer Jan Geldenhuys, with gardening expertise provided by Cummins Filtration Quality Manager Harold Richardson. Snacks were coordinated by Cummins Filtration Credit Controller Sueveshna Singh, and photographs were taken by Cummins Filtration Customer Assistance Representative Danelle Zaayman. The purchase and delivery of appliances and household goods was coordinated by Aroo Naidoo of the Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest, with oversight of distribution to residents provided by Pastor Twala of the Lutheran Church. The Pietermaritzburg & District Community Chest, founded in 1960, provides funding and supports other services to Welfare Organizations in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. Habitat for Humanity is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1976 to provide simple, decent and affordable houses for families in need.
